GERD

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation, heartburn, and other symptoms.

Causes:

GERD is caused by a weakened lower esophageal sphincter, obesity, pregnancy, certain foods and drinks, smoking, and some medications, leading to acid reflux and esophageal irritation.

Treatments

Treatment includes lifestyle changes, avoiding trigger foods, weight management, antacids, H2 blockers, proton pump inhibitors, and in severe cases, surgery to strengthen the esophageal sphincter.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if symptoms persist, worsen, or include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or weight loss.
