Fissure & Fistula

What is Anal Fistula?

Usually, a small boil close to the anal orifice indicates the presence of an anal fistula. This bursts, releasing thin pus or fluid. Within a few days, the discharge stops, but a few weeks later it recurs. We refer to this ailment as a fistula. The majority of patients are unable to distinguish between fistula, piles, and fissure conditions; as a result, fistulas cannot be detected at an early stage.

Types of Ano Fistulas:

Fistulas are categorized according on how they attach to specific anal sphincter complex segments.

  • Supersphincteric
  • Extrasphincteric
  • Transsphincteric
  • Intersphincteric.

The most frequent type is intersphincteric, while extrasphincteric is the least common. In order to assist the surgeon in making decisions during therapy, these classifications are crucial.

What is Complex Fistula?

Fistulas may become more complicated if they are not treated promptly. Based on the incontinence risk, recurrence risk, and complexity of the fistula, the Standards Committee for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) classified anal fistulas into simple and complicated categories.
